Manchester Thunder 68 Loughborough Lightning 52‏

Chelsea Pitman v LL 28.02 Manchester Thunder won a pulsating tie against Loughborough Lighting to record their sixth win on the bounce..Thunder were facing the Superleague's surprise package who will – especially on this performance - still have hopes of making the semi-finals this season. It wasn't the prettiest of games and Loughborough matched Thunder at certain points in the match but the home side ground out the win to remain top of the table. It was a rapid first five minutes to the game, but Thunder managed to edge it after capitalising on an athletic intercept from Sara Bayman. But Lightning's new signing Peace Proscovia continued her fine form so far this season and kept the Leicestershire side in touch.Jodie Gibson, starting at goal keeper for Thunder, was particularly vocal in what quickly became a physical battle as both defences pushed for a turnover.A lucky flick from an off-balance Kathryn ... The time has come to welcome Loughborough Lightning, captained by our very good friend Rachel Henry, back to the Thunderdome. Rachel has a lot of experience playing at the Thunderdome which will help her lead her team out on court tonight. The team is feeling very positive off the back of the game against Celtic Dragons on Monday. It was a massive team effort and every player that took to the court really stepped up and showed what they can offer. The game tonight is going to be very tough and physical. It is that stage in the season where tired legs begin to show. However, we have a solid squad of 12 players, all of which can hit that court and make an impact which is a big positive for us. This week we had a team bonding event at Café Football facing Old Trafford Football Stadium. It was a very enjoyable night full of banter and laughter. I don’t know how we had anything to chat about given the amount of time we already spend together but we never run out of things to ... More

Thunder too strong for Dragons. Final Score 81 vs 36

Manchester Thunder were too strong for Celtic Dragons as the home side dominated from start to finish at the Thunderdome. Dragons, without a win so far this season, will have arrived in Manchester in the hope they could force an unlikely upset. But Thunder didn't read that script as they ran out emphatic winners, 81-36. It was the first start of the season for Beth Cobden at wing attack and Eleanor Cardwell came in at goal attack.Thunder coach Tracey Neville had been rotating her shooters all season and young Alice Travis was brought into the squad to offer up options on the bench.Thunder showed their intent from the outset, forcing a turnover from the first centre pass and Helen Housby slotted two straightforward attempts to set the tone for the remainder of the first quarter. A week Thunder pass was intercepted by Dragons, giving them a sniff to score a turnover but Thunder keeper Kerry Almond won the ball back, and Housby made no ... More

Last Friday was our 'local derby' game against Yorkshire jets, and it's always hard to go across the Pennines and play away from home, especially for our first away game of the season, and Friday was no different. A scrappy start from both sides set the tone for the rest of the game, however the thunder girls came out with a win... Just. Happy to get the win, although unhappy with the performance. On the back of a tough week with 3 games, we were happy to take the points and have a well earned break! After having 3 full days off netball, we were back in training on Tuesday evening to prepare for the next round of matches, Celtic dragons on Monday live on sky! Training started with a solid match of our new made up game 'volley-foot' it involves a volleyball, netball nets and very few rules! Watch out for it in the near future.. Were definitely onto something!! After this we had a run out and got down to the serious netball stuff!! Although Celtic dragons are currently ... More

Coach’s Comment

Welcome to the Thunderdome!!Our second televised game of the season sees us take on the Welsh side of Celtic Dragons. The aim this year for the side and new appointed coach Trisha seems to be the World Championships out in Sydney this summer. Yet to win a game this season, I do feel that the loss of key players Timmy Cato to Yorkshire jets and Kyra Jones to Team Bath has heavily affected their side and their style of players, which will take some adjusting to. I am however, a big fan of the youngsters that are being exposed and getting some valuable learning experience out on court. The last few weeks have been tough and have seen some mixed performances from the MT side.  Learning experiences for the players over the last few weeks have demonstrated that the championship quarter, the ability to extend the score-line in one quarter by a considerable deficit, and retain that lead has played ... Thunder vs Dragons – Match Preview

Celtic Dragons could well be dreading the trip up north to Manchester Thunder. The two teams couldn’t have started the season any more differently. While Thunder are sitting pretty at the summit of the Superleague table, unbeaten, Dragons are rock-bottom without a win. Thunder have already seen off the league’s top three other sides and edged a close encounter with Roses Rivals Yorkshire Jets last time out. Dragons are only in front of Team Northumbria on goals conceded, but they have also scored over 40 less than the North East side, who sit above them in the tale. The Welsh outfit seem to have lost their spark since reaching the Superleague final in 2013, and enigmatic shooter Lottysha Cato to Jets. And are unlikely to get it back against the defending champions. Thunder’s strength so far this season has been having players in form across all areas of the court. Defensively, they have keeper Kerry Almond, whose partnership with Emma Dovey has been ... More

Match Report – Jets 51 vs Thunder 54

Laura Malcolm Manchester Thunder edged out Yorkshire Jets in a pulsating battle-of-the-roses in Leeds. Jets had started the season well, with their star signing Lottysha Cato the top shooter in the Superleague so far.But Thunder's defence has been solid and will have been feeling capable of keeping out the Grenadian shooter in this highly anticipated Roses clash.A hostile partisan crowd met Thunder from the first centre pass to the last.Jets came out all guns blazing ripping through Thunder's centre play, who were seemingly caught off -guard by Jets' strong start.Laura Malcolm called a time out with an injury to her finger, giving Thunder vital time to regroup and find and answer the Jets' dominance in the opening five minutes. But despite their excessive time in possession, they failed to stretch further than one turnover ahead. It was however uncharted territory for the Black and Yellows this season, having not fallen behind by more than one in their ... More

The weekend was a big test for us with a double header weekend facing Team Bath and Hertfordshire Mavericks. With such a short turn around we had to come out fighting against Mavericks. That's exactly what we did with getting a strong lead from the whistle and Mavericks didn't seem to have a response to us in the first quarter.  As the game went on Mavericks were getting in the swing of things and fighting back but we were just too dominant and with interceptions and shots going in there was no way we were letting them bring the score back. After a solid win behind us we now have to concentrate on the next game against Yorkshire Jets and what a better way than having a night off to catch up with the intense weekend of netball. Back into training on Thursday everyone seemed lively and full of energy! Starting with the warm up and a new invented game volleyball football! I don't think we've laughed so much as a squad in ... More

Manchester Thunder ready for Roses test in first away match of season

Manchester Thunder could not have started the season better. They’ve won all three opening games against the trio of sides that finished below the defending champions last season. They dispatched of Surrey Storm in a replay of the Superleague final, leading throughout, blew away Team Bath in a blistering second quarter display and edged out Hertfordshire Mavericks on Monday. But still, coach Tracey Neville is not resting on her laurels, especially with Thunder yet to play away this season and there will be no better test than the bubbling hostile reception in Leeds awaiting them tonight, as they face Yorkshire Jets in what is always a tasty battle of the roses tie.  “Yes, we have dealt well with pressure situations, at times a lot better than our opposition. I asked my players to win the game in one quarter, in the Bath game especially we did that but there have been plenty of errors and we have ... More

Thunder record third win beating Mavericks 49 vs 42

POM Laura Malcolm Thunder record third win in a row in close battle with MavericksManchester Thunder edged out Hertfordshire Mavericks in a bruising encounter at the Thunderdome.Even at this early stage of the season, this clash had turned into a must win for both sides, who were unbeaten heading into the game.Mavericks, arguably the best Superleague team on paper, have an England player in their ranks for every area of the court.  Player of the match Laura Malcolm said: “It always feels like goal for goal with Mavericks and having to keep checking the score because it always felt like we were close. “I'm happy with my performance today. There's definitely some things that didn't work for us today and we'll have to work on those in training.” Thunder came out of the blocks the hungrier team, powering to a six-goal lead in the opening five ...
