Pre-season friendly against Team Northumbria

Continue the countdown to the new Vitality Netball Superleague season with a pre-season fixture between the league’s two teams from the North of England. Manchester Thunder welcome Team Northumbria to the North West on Saturday 28th January as Karen Greig’s black and yellows continue their preparations for the 2017 campaign. The game will see the new look Thunder take on Te Aroha Keenan’s new look Team Northumbria and mean that Netball fans in Manchester will have had the chance to see six of the competition’s sides in action ahead of the new season, following December’s Mike Greenwood Trophy. The main game is at 3pm but join us from 12.45pm for an U19 NPL Development warm-up game with Manchester Development taking on NPL U19. Mike Greenwood Trophy Report 2016

Wasps won the fifth Mike Greenwood Trophy tournament after beating defending champions Team Bath in the final.The annual event featuring was held at Belle Vue for the first time, which will also play host to three of Manchester Thunder's home games in the 2017 Superleague season. Five of the league's teams featured in the event - Manchester Thunder, Wasps, Celtic Dragons, Hertfordshire Mavericks and Team Bath, which honours former Thunder coach Mike Greenwood, who died in 2011. A number of current senior players played under Mike, who also coached at Oldham NC, including Kathryn Turner, Dani Bloomfield and Kerry Almond, making it an epsecially poignant occasion for them. Wasps - one of three new teams to join the sport's top league - showed why they have already been touted as title favourites with a clinical and confident performance in all four games.  Bath also put out a solid and organised showing throughout the tournament but just could not ... Thunder train with Wigan Warriors

It's not often you'll see burly rugby players wearing a coloured netball bib during pre-season training.But in a special new project, netball and rugby league have come together for a duel training session. Players from Manchester Thunder and Wigan Warriors took to the court at the National Cycling Centre to share skills and tips. The clubs both play in their respective Superleagues - the elite league in their sport - and are well into their pre-season training routines, and today's session was aimed at offering something different to the challenging schedule.Wigan boss Shaun Wane said he was hopeful his players would learn new techniques and other aspects of the netball game in a bid to improve their own performance on the field. He is especially focused on the Warriors picking up better hand-eye coordination and new drills from the Black and Yellows. These are core aspects of netball, which is still a non-contact sport despite its increasing ... Malawi shooter Joyce Mvula joins Thunder

Manchester Thunder have signed Malawian shooter Joyce Mvula.Mvula joins the squad as a replacement for Jamaican Marvadene Anderson who has been withdrawn due to Visa issues. The 22-year-old Malawi Queen has plenty of experience on the international stage, having competed in the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and Netball World Cup in Sydney in 2015. Most recently she played for The Queens in the Fast5 tournament, beating the England Roses to take third place.A dynamic shooter who is quick and adaptable, Mvula is sure to fit in well into a Black and Yellows squad which is a mix of youth and experience.Mvula said: "I am really happy to be playing in the Superleague as it is one of the best in the world. Coming from Malawai, for me, it is a great achievement. I am looking forward to joining up with the team."Coach Karen Greig said of her latest import signing: "I am excited to have Joyce on board, having observed her during the NWC last year and fast fives more recently ... The Mike Greenwood Trophy pre-season tournament is to return for its fifth year.

 Superleague teams Wasps, Team Bath, Celtic Dragons and Hertfordshire Mavericks are all set to take part in the event on Saturday, December 10.The annual contest will take place at Belle Vue Stadium for the first time, which will also play host to three regular season Manchester Thunder home games in 2017. Last year's tournament was won by Team Bath, who will return to Manchester in an attempt to retain their crown. It will be the first major competition in charge for new Black and Yellows head coach Karen Greig and also the first opportunity for squads to play competitively in pre-season. The annual tournament is named in honour of former Thunder head coach Mike Greenwood, who passed away in 2011. Debbie Hallas, Manchester Thunder managing director, said: "The MGT is a great opportunity to preview the Vitality Netball Superleague 2017 squads before the season starts, especially with all the changes that have taken place in the off-season and new clubs being ... Vitality Netball Superleague Fixtures 2017

Manchester Thunder will begin their 2017 Superleague season with an away trip to Loughborough Lightning.The Black and Yellows will then head to Birmingham's Genting Arena to play in the Super 10 Day in the second round, which replaces last season's Super Saturday at the same venue. The Emma Dovey-led team will take to the court in the West Midlands to face defending champions Surrey Storm.Two home games then follow against new side Scottish Sirens and Welsh outfit Celtic Dragons. April is set to be a busy month, with Thunder involved in six matches, including a trip to Bath and Scotland. May is likely to be a key period in the season, with Thunder playing new franchises Wasps at home and Severn Stars away. Thunder then finish the regular season with two home games against Team Bath and Stars.The play-offs will take place on the same weekend, with the semi finals on June 10 and the grand final on June 11.Click Here to view the Fixtures for the season. Emma Dovey named as Captain

Emma Dovey has been selected as Manchester Thunder captain for the 2017 Superleague season.The defender will be supported by co-vice captains Kerry Almond and Kathryn Turner.Dovey is one of Thunder's most experienced players, and takes the reigns from long-term skipper Sara Bayman, who has signed for New Zealand side Central Pulse.She will lead a 12-strong squad brimming with youth and experience, which includes Jamaican international Marvadene Anderson and Silver Fern Liana Leota.​The 25-year-old said of her new appointment with the Black and Yellows: “I am very honoured to be captain of Manchester Thunder for the 16/17 season. Obviously we have had a lot of change within the team this year but we are excited with our new signings, and I'm looking forward to leading our new-look team for what is set to be a very exciting Superleague season.” More

Karen Greig completes her 2017 Manchester Thunder squad

Coach Karen Greig has named her final four players to complete the 2017 Manchester Thunder squad.Paige Kindred, Beccy Hoult, Sophie Morgan and Dani Bloomfield have been selected to play for the Black and Yellows next season.All four have previous Superleague experience and will bring a mixture of youth and raw talent to the team.Now her final 12 is complete, Greig is focused on pre-season and is ready to work on blending her squad, which is a balance of youth and experience.“I am really pleased with the squad that we have pulled together,” she said. “The blend of youth, experience and styles is what I am excited about the most. I really believe over the next four months of pre-season we can solidify and create a tight night performance environment which will see us challenging those top four play-off spots.”Defender Kindred will be hoping to secure a more consistent place in the team, after being on the fringes for a couple of seasons. Greig ...
