Team Emmerdale got revenge over their soap rivals Team Corrie as they won the second ITV Text Santa charity netball match. Stars from both soaps battled it out on court in the trans-Pennine showdown but it was Charley Webb’s Emmerdale side who clinched victory 18-22.
Katy Cavanagh was once again captain of the Coronation Street team, taking to the court with cast-mates from the cobbles – Jane Danson, Tisha Merry, Brooke Vincent and Hayley Tamaddon. Charley, who plays Debbie Dingle on Emmerdale, lined up on court alongside Eden Taylor-Draper, Michelle Hardwick, Sammy Winward and Amy Walsh The cast, who played in cute custom-made netball dresses, were joined by crew from their respective soap and also players from Superleague teams Manchester Thunder (Corrie) and Yorkshire Jets (Emmerdale). England and Thunder players Sara Bayman and Helen Housby were two of the five Thunder players on Team Corrie. Claire Brown and Lauren Potter were among the Jets players to take to the court for Team Emmerdale. Team Corrie were looking to clinch their second successive win in the charity event, but Team Emmerdale had other ideas.

The team from the Yorkshire-based soap raced into a six-goal lead in the opening five minutes and never looked back.
Skipper Charley Webb lead from the front and scored some tough attempts but Hayley Tamaddon at the other end also had a great game for Team Corrie. Hayley was loving life in the shooting spotlight and took part in some energetic – and comical – celebrations each time she scored Tisha and Katy worked hard to get Corrie back into the game but Emmerdale were buoyed by the noisy 1,000- strong crowd. With tensions running high, there were some feisty exchanges between players, with Brooke and Charley’s passion to win resulting in some soap-style drama on court. All was set up for a tense finale with Corrie just four goals behind with five minutes to play but Team Emmerdale held on to level up the Soap Showdown 1-1. Charley, who also played in the inaugural Text Santa match, said: “I think we played really well and we worked so hard as a team. We deserve this. “I have been practising as much as I could. “We were so up for this, we have been for ages and we all just wanted to raise as much money for charity as possible. “It’s all about Text Santa and I am just happy that we won. I will definitely be back next year.” Cast members on court were cheered on by their co-stars, including Amy Kelly who took time out from filming on the cobbles and Emmerdale’s Danny Miller. Glam former Emmerdale star Sheree Murphy was also spotted in the audience with her kids. Corrie’s Ian Puleston-Davies was a netball convert by the end of the match and was gutted to have been unable to cheer his team on to glory. “It was such fun. I had no know;edge of the game before but I learnt quite quickly. “I genuinely want to come and see a Manchester Thunder Superleague game now.” He said Ian hosted an auction of signed dresses from each team at half time with Danny, with over £1500 raised towards helping the six charities Text Santa supports -Teenage Cancer Trust, Guide Dogs, WellChild, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Alzheimer’s Society and Together for Short Lives. Team Emmerdale may have emerged victorious but all players left the court with a smile in the knowledge that thousands had been raised for charity.
